Ok, this may be a little controversial, but I can handle it!
This is an age-old debate amongst interior designers - "to charge or not to charge for an initial consultation"... you may be surprised to know I do not charge for initial discovery meetups in my design business.
Notice I call them 'initial meetups' - we treat them totally different than a working consultation. In our business Urban Theory Design, a working consultation is where we are going to a client's home to assess their present design queries and then answer questions and provide feedback on the things they need immediate design help with, right then and there.
And YES, this is something we charge for - we're providing a valuable service that involves our time and expertise.
But if we're scheduling an interview more-or-less to see if they and their potential project might be a good fit, followed up with a design fee proposal for the project scope, we're not solving real-time design problems in those moments. This is what I call an 'initial design meetup'... and I don't charge for these.
Have I lost money doing it this way? Nope - Let me explain more about it in this 7-minute YouTube video!
Do it different. Do it better. Elevate the industry.
